Welcome to Columbia Heights
back to neighborhood listing |
| |
|
Columbia Heights is one of those neighborhoods
with personality. Probably the results of
the community's diversity. And now it also has what
few inner city neighborhoods never seem to have
enough of - convenient shopping. No DC
neighborhood has generated as much excitement as
Columbia Heights in the past few years. It's a
blaring success, so why not gloat. The
Columbia Heights Metro Station and shopping
district now houses Target, Best Buy, Ruby
Tuesdays plus other national a local
retailers.
I drive along fourteenth street every few days
and have for a great number of years. As I
Pass Park Rd these days I try to recall what was
here before the transformation. I can't. Can't
pull and images except for the Tivoli, but it
still stands. Whatever! What we have today
is inviting. The neighborhood has under gone an
almost total make over. The brown stones and rowhouses renovated, apartments
and abandoned building converted into
condos, and new condos built where there was
space available.
Columbia Heights is the city's most
ethnically and economically diverse
neighborhood, with both high-priced condominiums
and townhouses as well as public and
middle-income housing.

Real
Estate |
| |
|
Columbia Heights is one of the most
exciting neighborhoods about town. While
it had few of the entertainment options
found Downtown or the down home quality
of Capitol Hill, bit has shopping
something DC neighborhoods have forever longed
for.
In 1999 the city
announced
revitalization plans for
the neighborhood and by
2010 most of those plans
had been realized. The
Columbia Heights Metro
Station and shopping
district with the
addition of Target, Best
Buy, Ruby Tuesdays
plus other national a
local retailers has
brought the Columbia
Heights real estate
market to the fore front
with increased demand.
The pricing is
reflective of this
increased demand.
Columbia Heights is the
city's most
ethnically and
economically diverse
neighborhood.
The average sales price
for a studio or one bedroom condo
in Columbia Height is
about $290,000. A
two-bedroom unit jumps
the average price up to
almost $470,000,
with a select few
selling for between
$500,000 and $700,000.
As for single-family
attached and detached
homes, the average sales
prices for a
three-bedroom is around
$472,000. |

Night on the Town |
| |
|
|
Once the evening rolls
'round, Columbia
transforms into a
bedroom community. Not
meaning there aren't
things to do, there are,
but limited.
Still, we like to begin
at CommonWealth
Gastropub (1400 Irving St NW
202/265-1400). Here we like the
large selection and the
happy hour pricing. If
you get a later start
there is a late happy
hour Monday Through
Thursday between 10pm
and 11:30pm. Not to be
out done The Heights
happy hour daily is 4pm
to 7pm with a Friday and
Saturday night happy
hour from 11pm until
midnight. And if you
need a bite of ambiance
The Height is a great
place to take a date for
a nice romantic evening.
There is also patio
dining. Haven't had the
opportunity to dine here
personally, but I'm told
the 'Seared Salmon with
Jasmine rice is worth
having again and
again...
When we're in the
mood to step up the
pace, we hop on the
metro to neighboring U
Street, downtown for the
noise.. |

Getting Around |
| |
Columbia Heights is walker
friendly, so
walking is a sufficient
and efficient way to get
around for the most
part. The walkscore for
Columbia is 83 ( not a walkers
paradise but still very walkable.) , meaning
personal transportation
is not a requirement. Walkscore calculates the
walkability of a given
address's proximity, to
dining, library,
schools, shopping,
transportation.......
Washington Area
Metropolitan Transit
Authority (the
Metro) is also
an excellent and
inexpensive option to
get from point A to
point B. The Columbia
Heights Metro Station sit
smack dab in the center
of the neighborhood
giving residents easy
access to all points
about town. Fourteenth
and Sixteenth are two of
the city's busy bus
routes, so getting
around by bus is a good
options. Even on a slow
day you are no more the
fifteen minutes for
downtown or Federal
Triangle.
Sometimes life calls for
a cab -- and around
here, they're
are fairly easy find.
Just raise your arm and
one will stop. If you
are drive parking can be
a hassle at times.
Many car owners here
find it beneficial to
own a garage space, not
available in many
residential buildings.
Don't have personal
trans but still need to
get to the Burbs ZipCar
could be an option. While not a
total replacement for
personal transportation
as the slogan goes
'wheels when you want
them'. Simply join their
service, swipe the card
and you're on your way..
